About Orthodontics

How do braces work?

Orthodontics, or Braces, use gentle pressure applied over time to move teeth into their proper positions. Braces consist of two main components. The brackets, which are affixed to your teeth, and an archwire, which connects them. Brackets are usually made from metal or ceramic.

Braces work by the archwire, which is threaded through the brackets, applying gentle pressure to move you teeth. The archwire is shaped to reflect your ideal bite, the way we want you to look after treatment. As the wire tries to return to its original shape, it moves your teeth into their proper positions. As your teeth move, the bone on one side gives way while new bone grows in behind it, creating your new, permanent smile!.

Different Types of Braces

Braces can be made from several different materials, metal being the most common. Metal braces can also be coated with 24K gold, they have the strength of metal but blend in better with the natural yellow tint of your teeth. Translucent clear ceramic braces are the most popular with adults. Even up close they are not easily noticed. The trade-off is that they are more fragile than metal braces.
